In the 1980s, the farm crisis hit Spencer, Iowa, hard and to support her family, single mother Vicki Myron took a job as the sleepy little town’s head librarian. But she soon had an unauthorized helper. One frigidly cold morning, Vicki came upon a tiny, half-frozen kitten in the night drop box. Dewey, as he came to be known, grew into a people “person” whose rascally antics provided laugh-out-loud entertainment for library patrons, and his sixth sense about those in need made him famous, drawing people from hundreds of miles around.
